The Centre is equipped to support research and development projects in prosthetic and orthotic design evaluation. Suitably qualified individuals may pursue research leading to the award of the degrees of MPhil or PhD. Current research projects include those of a fundamental research flavour, as well as clinical evaluation and development projects.
The Department is undertaking research projects in the following general areas: prosthetic and orthotic device design; clinical evaluation of contemporary practice; development and testing of new materials and methods for prosthetics and orthotics; diabetic foot care pressure measurement, insole design and shoe construction; development and evaluation of computer-aided patient measurement, device design and manufacturing systems; human performance measurement in health and disease.
The development and evaluation of CAD/CAM methods in prosthetics and orthotics is another area of interest, as are orthotic techniques in the management of cerebral palsy. Investigations of the biomechanics of trans-femoral socket design are underway.
The Department enjoys collaborative links with other clinical and research facilities in the UK and overseas. Research funding sources have included the National Health Service in Scotland, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the European Community.
