The National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics is a Department of the Faculty of Engineering in the University of Strathclyde. It was established in 1972 as a UK training and education centre in prosthetics and orthotics and now includes research expanding into a main activity.

Our work includes:

  • Providing undergraduate pre-registration education for prosthetists and orthotists.
  • Providing postgraduate courses for the continuing professional development of individuals working in the rehabilitation field.
  • Researching existing and new techniques in the field of rehabilitation.
  • Contributing to specialist information for health professionals and students.
  • Partnership working with clinical services to aid and support the development and implementation of specialist services.

Our Vision is to promote excellence in patient care by leading world class education, research and innovation in prosthetics, orthotics and related areas. We work closely with the Scottish Government and the National Health Service to contribute to the field of prosthetics and orthotics. We will strive to achieve the excellence agenda of the University of Strathclyde and to contribute to the Delivering Care, Enabling Health agenda of NHS Scotland.

We now look ahead to building on the successes of the National Centre, notably the internationally renowned BSc (Hons) Prosthetics and Orthotics course, and are absolutely committed to further improving our teaching and research activities.  The strategy for the National Centre clearly has the best interests of the patient/user at the focus of its activities. The strategy promotes excellence in education and research so that rehabilitation professionals can learn and develop better methods of practice related to prosthetics and orthotics.
