Ali
Cousin of Muhammad and one of the first to accept Islam. Married Fatima, Muhammad's daughter. Regarded as the ideal warrior and saint. Many legends surround his life and many sayings are attributed to him. He was declared Caliph or spiritual leader in 656 and after a series of struggles against rivals was assassinated in 661.
