SCELG was established in 2013 as a centre of academic excellence in environmental law and governance. The goal of the Centre and of its members is to foster multidisciplinary and policy relevant research in International, European and national (both Scottish and English) environmental law.

SCELG also operates as a hub for excellence in PhD and postgraduate teaching programmes in environmental law and governance within the School of Law. It hosts a Visiting Researcher Programme and welcomes consultancy collaborations with public and private policy makers and stakeholders.

SCELG organises a wide range of events, including high-profile guest lectures, seminars and conferences. It collaborates closely with the other Centres within the School of Law (Centre for the Study of Human Rights Law, Centre for Law, Crime and Justice and the Centre for Internet Law and Policy) and with Centres and Institutes across the University.
