The Department of Physics offers the following resources to school teachers and pupils:

  • Open days & evenings
  • Advanced Higher days
  • School talks
  • Advanced Higher investigations
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers

Open days & evenings

University of Strathclyde open days are an opportunity to find out more about the courses that interest you. You can speak to current students and staff, and sample what the campus has to offer.

Physics Open Evening
15th November 2023 6:30-8:30pm
Register here

During the Open Evening, the Department of Physics opens its doors for parents, pupils, and teachers to come and get to know us. Following a general introduction to the department, there are tours of the teaching and research laboratories, and the evening finishes with a chance to chat informally with our teaching staff.

You're most welcome to visit, to find out the benefits of studying physics, what career prospects there are with a physics degree, and to ask us your questions.

Advanced Higher days

The Department hosts Advanced Higher days in December/January each year. School pupils hear talks from researchers describing how their research relates to the Advanced Higher Curriculum. They also have the chance to perform some simple experiments related to the various learning outcomes associated with the Advanced Higher. These experiments are different from those that the pupils would undertake for their investigations.

School talks

Academics in the department are available to present a class in school covering concepts in either the Higher or Advanced Higher syllabus. They will also help relate the importance of these concepts to cutting-edge science and engineering. We give talks on the following curriculum-related topics:

  • lasers & optoelectronics - making light work
  • waves - from ultrasound to ultraviolet
  • what have Scotland's physicists done for you?

Applicant days

Every student who receives an offer from the department is invited to a lunch at the department in the Spring term. The visit gives students a chance to chat with current students, learn more about university life in general, and Strathclyde (and Physics) in particular. Our academic staff will also be on hand to answer any queries.
