Under the previous Curriculum (5-14), there was an entitlement for all primary pupils to receive 500 hours of Modern Language input over 6 years. With Curriculum for Excellence, there are no more input measures. Rather, ‘Outcomes’ are a measure of what pupils are entitled to have achieved by the end of each Level.
Modern Languages Experiences and Outcomes (downloadable from LTS) list the tasks that pupils should be able to achieve by end of P7 (Second Level).
In addition, the Modern Languages: Principles and Practice paper (LTS), states the following on page 3:
'As teachers use these statements of experiences and outcomes to support their planning, by the end of Primary 7, the majority of children will have learned the skills necessary to:
- give a short presentation about themselves
- take part in simple conversations and transactions
- understand classroom instructions and personal information
- enjoy listening to a story, song or poem
- read aloud a simple text
- read and understand a short text
- write a few sentences about themselves and others.'
For an overall view of the entitlements of children and young people in Curriculum for Excellence, please read the document Building the Curriculum 3 (LTS).
Curriculum for Excellence specifically refers to young people 'developing a knowledge and understanding of the world and Scotland’s place in it'.
