NEWS AND EVENTS IN 2008
CONFUCIUS CLASSROOMS IN SCOTLAND
- Congratulations to Jim Scott, Meryl James and everyone at Perth High School for the splendid celebration of the new Confucius Classroom Hubs in Scotland. There was a wonderful introduction by Ben Urquhart and Philip Chan, senior pupils at Perth High School, and speeches from the Cabinet Secretary, Fiona Hyslop, Bernard McLeary and Kay Livingston. Pupil presentations on the Perth and Kinross visit to Shanghai, inspiring music,dancing and workshops emphasised for all the importance of developing links with China and the enthusiasm of staff and pupils alike.
- The Confucius Classroom Hub for the City of Edinburgh at St George's will be opened on Friday 9 May.
- The SCEN Pupil Conference will take place at Perth High School on Thursday 12 June. There will be the usual opportunity for short presentations.

Information Day - Access 3 Cantonese and Mandarin, 25 April 2008
This half day event will provide an opportunity for teachers and lecturers to familiarise themselves with the content and delivery of Access 3 Cantonese and Mandarin.
Launch Event, Intermediate 1 & 2 Cantonese and Mandarin, 08 May 2008
This whole day event will provide an opportunity for teachers, lecturers and the wider community to familiarise themselves with the Courses at Intermediate 1 & 2 levels, and the format of the day will include presentations and workshop sessions. The focus will be on the practicalities of effective delivery of Units and Unit assessments and also preparation for external examination. Specimen Papers at both levels will be available for this purpose. Presentations will be led by SQA’s Development Officer for Chinese Languages, Fan Lin, who will also assist in hosting workshop sessions alongside members of the examining team. There will also be an update from LTS colleagues on the development of teaching materials to support the delivery of the Intermediate 1 & 2 Courses.
Information Event, (Modern Languages) for Work Purposes, Access 3 and Intermediate 1, 01 May 2008
This whole day event will provide the opportunity for teachers and lecturers in schools and FE colleges to familiarise themselves with new Free Standing generic Units and associated Assessment Support Packs (ASPs).
The Units will interest practitioners who wish to integrate the study and use of modern foreign languages in a vocational setting, into the delivery of a variety of courses or as stand alone additions to existing provision. The Units can promote horizontal progression across two or more languages at the same level, or vertical progression through the levels. The Units will be offered in Cantonese, French, Gaelic (learners), German, Italian, Mandarin, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Urdu. Units at intermediate 2 and Higher level will be available in and after 2009.
The event will consist of both presentations and workshops and include exemplification of assessment approaches in French, with a translation into English.

China Scotland Leadership Conference, Bridging Language and Culture , at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre
Supported by the Scottish Educational Leadership, Management and Administration Society (SELMAS), the Hong Kong Schools Self evaluation Network (HKSSEN), the Scottish Executive Education Department (SEED) and the Tam O'Shanter Trust.
On 24 October the Scotland -China Education Network held a China Scotland Leadership Conference at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.
The First Minister Alex Salmond addressed the conference which was also attended by Madame Xu Lin, Director General of Hanban of China. The First Minister acknowledged the special contribution Dr Judith McClure, Headteacher of St George's School and also the convener of SCEN, hae made to the teaching of Chinese in and out of the classroom. The conference brought together leading officials from Hanban and principals of some partner schools in China, as well as 200 representatives of Scottish schools, the Scottish government, representatives of Scottish business links and associations. There were twenty three varied and entertaining performances by pupils (and staff) including the making of a Chinese/Gaelic Animation Film by pupils of Breadalbane Academy, a live on-platform Chinese lesson with young learners of St George’s School, Miss Milk is Getting Married performed in Chinese by Merchiston Castle School, a colourful dance display by Glasgow Chinese School, and a moving presentation you are never too old to learn Chinese by a seventy eight year old student of the Chinese Edinburgh Community School.
