Entry Routes

You will not necessarily have to offer traditional school examination qualifications to gain admission but we generally look for evidence of recent academic study (within the last 4 years).  The following information aims to give some guidelines on entry to the University of Strathclyde.  Other qualifications are also considered, so you should contact the Adult Information Service or the Academic Selector for your proposed course (see prospectus for appropriate course contact) and they will be happy to give you advice.

We recognise that adult returners follow a wide range of pathways before embarking on degree-level study.  Below are some of the more common entry routes to studying at Strathclyde:

  • Highers/Advanced Highers/A-Levels
  • Access Course
  • HNC/HND/BTEC
  • Pre-Entry Certificate Course
  • Diploma of Higher Education
  • Summer School - most commonly attended for entry to a science or engineering course to supplement an Access course or refresh knowledge where Highers were taken some time ago

Scottish Wider Access Programme

The Scottish Wider Access programme offers a wide range of courses for adults thinking about opportunities to access higher education that do not have any qualifications or have not studied within the last 5 years.  Access courses are run in Further Education Colleges and generally start late August and finish the following June.  Attendance is usually about 3½ days per week.  Strathclyde welcomes applications from Access students directly onto most of our degree courses.  You should check with the Academic Selector for your proposed degree to confirm that your course is an appropriate one.
