Biotechnology
MSc/Postgraduate Diploma /Postgraduate Certificate
This course provides highly sought masters level knowledge and practical skills in biotechnology. The course combines fundamental principles of fermentation technologies with molecular approaches for making biotechnological products. Students may choose options in pharmaceutical, industrial, medical or molecular biotechnology.

Curriculum
In Semester 1, key biotechnology techniques are developed through an introductory course covering molecular biology, separation techniques, assays and microbial growth. Students also take lecture classes in microbial physiology and protein structure and function, subjects that underpin modern biotechnology.
In semester 2, students follow advanced classes in fermentation technology, molecular biotechnology and an in-depth study of applications in biotechnology, including commercialization and entrepreneurship.
Students also choose from options in:
- Molecular biotechnology
- Pharmaceutical biotechnology
- Industrial biotechnology
- Medical Biotechnology
In addition, in semester 1, an important range of generic skills is covered, including academic writing, statistics, project management, and ethics for the biosciences.
Teaching and Assessment
The course is delivered through lectures, tutorials and hands-on practical sessions. Assessment of taught classes is through written assignments and practical reports.
Students who successful complete 120 credits of taught classes may take a 60 credit laboratory project for the MSc. This is assessed through a written thesis.
Career Prospects
Graduates from this course should be ideally qualified to obtain positions in the biotechnology industry. Some students may wish to continue studies for MPhil or PhD.
Course duration
MSc: 12 months full-time; 24 months part-time PgDip: 9 months full-time; 21 months part-time; PgCert: 9 months full-time; 12 months part-time.

Entry requirements
First- or second-class Honours degree in a biological or chemical discipline.
English Language Requirements
English lanuguage minimum IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL IBT 90-95.
We offer a range of English Language course for students who wish to improve their English. Module 3 is free of charge to all applicants and we strongly recommend all international students to take advantage of this free course. This is an excellent way to not only improve your English but to get to know Glasgow and the University and make new friends.
We also offer comprehensive English Language presessional and Foundation courses for students whose IELTS scores are below 6.5.
For students with IELTS of 6.0, an offer can be made conditional on completing Modules 2 and 3 of Presessional English (start date: 16th July 2013).
For students with IELTS of 5.5, an offer can be made conditional on completing Modules 1,2 and 3 of Presessional English (start date: 17th June 2013).
