Personal statement

I have been a member of staff at the University of Strathclyde since 1984 (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, 1984-1990; Lecturer, 1990-1998; Senior Lecturer, 1998-2012; Senior Teaching Fellow, 2012-present). Additionally I was Head of Teaching and Assistant Head of Institute in the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (2006-2011) and I am currently Vice-Dean (Academic) in the Faculty of Science (2011-present).

In my current role as a Senior Teaching Fellow in the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, I teach anatomical, physiological and pharmacological concepts to students across all years of all degrees programmes within the Institute. Subjects taught range from basic introductory animal and plant biology in lower years to advanced concepts in neuropharmacology, clinical pharmacology and therapeutics in the final year.

In a research career spanning over twenty years, I have authored around 40 peer-reviewed publications and 60 conference abstracts relating to a wide range of projects focusing around the elucidation of the control mechanisms involved in the regulation of synaptic transmission at the neuromuscular junction. These have included the characterisation of the autoimmune nature of the Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome, the characterisation of the pharmacology of the mammalian neuromuscular vesicular acetylcholine transporter and the characterisation of the nicotinic autoreceptor control of mammalian neuromuscular transmission.

As Vice-Dean (Academic) I provide Faculty leadership in the areas of teaching and learning, helping establish strategic direction and delivery of best practice in all areas relating to student education.
