Students in Difficulty
Any member of staff can contact us to discuss concerns about a student. It can be helpful to talk over the situation and/or gather some information.
We are happy to have students referred to the Service and you can call us while they are with you or just ask them to make contact with us directly. We rarely write out to students to invite them in because of the negative effect of any feeling that they have been 'sent' and have to attend. Similarly we find it works best if you check out with the student if they attended the Service and if that was helpful.
We do not routinely write letters for students for the purpose of extensions, as it is just as easy for us to be misinformed as for their tutor! We are however happy to have students referred because they seem to be struggling academically for personal reasons. If we are seeing students and can offer the department reassurance that the problem is significant and receiving attention then, with the students permission, we will write to this effect.
Elsewhere on this site there is more information about this service, the nature of counselling and some of the problems commonly experienced by students. Our confidentiality policy is also explained in more detail but do not hesitate to call us on ext 3510 to discuss any questions.
Counselling for Staff
