What were your reasons for deciding to study a postgraduate research degree?

I am eager to delve into complex problems and contribute meaningful, original insights through rigorous research. Additionally, this path allows me to significantly develop my academic and professional capabilities, equipping me with advanced skills in analysis, critical thinking, and problem-solving that are crucial across various professional domains. Lastly, I am aware that in my intended career, having a PhD degree is often essential. How did you first hear about the University of Strathclyde?

During my time at Shanghai University of Electric Power, where I was exposed to various educational collaboration programs. The University of Strathclyde was frequently mentioned for its excellence in research and strong partnerships, sparking my interest in pursuing further studies there.

Why did you choose to study at Strathclyde?

Give some details on the research you were conducting at Strathclyde?

My research at the University of Strathclyde focused on a groundbreaking methodology for modelling electrical distribution networks using the Norton technique. This approach is designed to accurately assess harmonic power flow in systems that contain multiple harmonic sources—a scenario becoming increasingly common with the expansion of renewable energy sources. These energy sources introduce significant harmonic disturbances due to the switching operations and the inherent characteristics of power electronics. Traditional models often fail to capture the complexity and variability of harmonic currents within distribution networks, highlighting the need for this innovative approach.

The Norton technique, known for its potential, had not been fully explored for its applicability in diverse power system scenarios. My study addresses this gap by validating the technique's effectiveness in estimating crucial parameters, such as harmonic voltage and current amplitudes, as well as harmonic voltage distortion rates. We conducted systematic testing on a representative system and compared the results with those from conventional modeling methods to confirm the Norton technique's superiority in simplifying and accurately modeling harmonic power flows.

Furthermore, my research extended into probabilistic power flow analysis using Monte Carlo simulations and semi-invariant methods to tackle the variability challenges introduced by stochastic wind and solar power generation. This variability can jeopardize the safe and stable operation of power systems. By developing mathematical models that accommodate the unpredictability of renewable energy outputs, the study provides a detailed understanding of power flow dynamics. This, in turn, equips power system operators with critical data to optimize operations and enhance system reliability.

This position has allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of educational methodologies, enhance my communication skills, and gain practical teaching experience while continuing my research.
