What is speech and language therapy?

Speech and language therapists assess and treat a wide variety of speech, language, and communication problems. Areas of expertise include:

  • speech and language pathology
  • linguistics and phonetics
  • psychology
  • medical sciences

Why study speech and language therapy? 

This is a rewarding career path that really makes a difference. You’ll work with babies, children, and adults with different levels of speech, language, and communication problems, or difficulties in swallowing, drinking or eating.

Our BA course, which provides a route into this profession, is the longest established in Scotland and one of the oldest in the UK.

Our facilities are great – you’ll have access to our Speech & Language Therapy Lab which provides equipment for the analysis of speech production.

My advice to prospective PhD students would be to look at what expertise and support your supervisors can offer you. My supervision team are experts in the specific field I am studying but it was also important to know that I could work with them on a personal level too.
