CoronavirusStudent update: 3 June

Dear Strathclyde students,

As we approach the end of the current session, we appreciate that many of you will be looking ahead to the start of the new academic year along with the new students who will be joining Strathclyde for the first time.

Understandably, you will have many questions about how your studies will continue in light of the ongoing Covid19 pandemic.

I am writing to update you on how we are preparing for the new academic year and what this may mean for your studies and the wider student experience at Strathclyde. Most importantly, we are fully committed to ensuring and delivering the highest quality learning and student experience at Strathclyde and we are very much looking forward to seeing you on campus as soon as it is safe to do so.

As with all decisions that we have taken throughout this period, the safety, health and wellbeing of our students and staff are at the heart of all our decision making. Please be assured that we will continue to act in full accordance with advice and guidance from the UK and Scottish Governments, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, our NHS and the World Health Organisation.

The University is actively planning to support all our students and the detail of how we will deliver learning, teaching and assessment in 2020/21, safely and in line with the four phases of the Scottish Government Coronavirus (COVID-19): framework for decision making. We wish to create an environment in which you are able to enjoy access to the campus, safely and which best supports the learning and wider student experience of all in our community.

Staff are currently working on plans to support the delivery of your degree programme in the coming semester and beyond. This will be through a blend of campus-based activities, where it is safe to do so, supported by our online environment and services. Further details on modes of delivery will be confirmed over the coming weeks and months. We will do everything we can to create and maintain the highest quality learning and teaching experience, keeping your best interests at the heart of our decision making.

Many of you have been in touch with us about your individual experiences to date; this has been vital in helping inform our ongoing decisions and planning for 2020/21. We recognise that you are all in unique circumstances and these experiences are helping shape our plans for the delivery of learning, teaching and assessment in academic year 2020/21.

To all of you, we wish to commend you for the tremendous resilience you have shown over the last few months. You have endured a period of unprecedented disruption to daily life, quite unlike anything experienced before in any of our lifetimes. Through this, you have progressed with your learning, undertaken assessments and maintained your focus in looking forward to the future. We are tremendously proud of you and our Strathclyde community at large and look forward to recognising this through our return to campus later in the year.

We know you will have many questions over the coming weeks and months and while exact timescales are not yet available for all aspects of the phased return to campus, we will be in regular contact throughout the summer period to confirm our plans for the start of the new Semester. We will be in touch again in the coming weeks with further details. In the meantime, we hope that you, your family and friends, continue to stay safe and well.

Best wishes,

Jim
