What were your reasons for taking on this degree?
I believe that learning is a continuous journey. With two years of work experience, I was eager to strengthen my foundational knowledge of accounting and finance and acquire additional technical skills to progress in my career. The MSc International Accounting and Finance programme was the ideal choice since it encompasses the technical aspects of finance along with the intricacies of accounting and general business. More importantly, I wanted to immerse myself in a vibrant community, learning alongside peers from around the world. This experience has not only broadened my perspectives but has also fulfilled my lifelong dream of studying and living abroad. Taking this step has been transformative, both professionally and personally.
What attracted you to study at Strathclyde?
Choosing the MSc International Accounting and Finance programme at Strathclyde was an easy decision since it offered the perfect blend of subjects I was seeking in a master's degree. The programme's academic structure includes core modules like corporate finance and advanced accounting, taught in a practical and realistic context. I was confident that the programme would effectively bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry practices while helping me develop technical expertise. Additionally, the flexibility to tailor the programme through electives allows me to focus on my specific interests.
The positive feedback I have received from alumni and friends who studied at Strathclyde, along with the top rankings gave me great confidence in my decision.
Moreover, the university's location in such a vibrant and beautiful city was another compelling factor. The idea of living and studying in a place with rich culture and history certainly added to the overall appeal.
How was the application process?
The application process was simple and straightforward. The admissions team was incredibly responsive and promptly clarified any queries I had. Additionally, I am grateful for the timely updates and information about scholarship opportunities from the student recruitment team. This allowed me to apply early, and I was fortunate enough to be awarded the Strathclyde Business School Master's Scholarship for international students. This support made a significant difference in my decision to join Strathclyde.
What do you like about your course and Strathclyde?
When I decided to pursue a master’s degree, I sought a programme that offered a holistic experience. I wanted to be pushed beyond my comfort zone and get involved in a rigorous academic environment, while also having opportunities to learn and grow outside the classroom. Strathclyde has truly lived up to this!
I had an enriching learning experience throughout this past year. The lecturers and professors were highly approachable and always willing to offer advice and engage in conversations with students. The workshops have been exceptionally valuable, facilitating smaller group studies where we engaged in discussions, brainstormed ideas with classmates, and easily clarified our queries. Strathclyde Business School also organised numerous networking events and speaker sessions, providing unique opportunities to interact one-on-one with experienced industry leaders.
What specialist knowledge/professional skills have you developed whilst studying the course?
During the course, I developed a comprehensive set of skills and specialised knowledge. The Equity Analysis class sharpened my abilities in financial modelling, valuation, and understanding business strategy while keeping me updated with industry news.
The Quantitative Methods in Finance class significantly strengthened my statistical and econometric skills, enhancing my ability to derive insights from data sets and analyse research papers in finance.
Additionally, I gained proficiency in preparing accounting statements and learned about the UK’s economy, financial services landscape, and banking regulations. These skills and insights have helped me prepare for a successful career in finance.
What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde has helped/will help you achieve your goals?
The fields of risk management, corporate finance, and investments have always intrigued me. My ambition in the near future is to secure an analyst position at a major bank or financial services firm in the UK. Strathclyde's career services have been instrumental in helping me navigate the UK application process, offering advice and resources from CV preparation to practice aptitude tests. One of the most valuable aspects of Strathclyde's career support is the continued assistance provided even after graduation.
Additionally, I aim to achieve certifications like FRM or CFA to advance to senior leadership roles in the future. Strathclyde has been supportive in this regard, offering scholarship opportunities to help fast-track my progress towards these certifications. Throughout the course, I have developed several practical skills and gained a deeper understanding of the financial services sector and current industry trends. This has significantly boosted my confidence, particularly in interviews. My time at Strathclyde has equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue my career goals and succeed in the competitive finance industry.
How have you found your time living in Glasgow?
I have absolutely enjoyed living in Glasgow. The city lives up to its reputation as one of the friendliest places in the world. Every nook and corner of Glasgow speaks volumes about its rich history and vibrant culture. There is something for everyone here, catering to all interests and age groups.
The food scene is diverse and exciting, offering everything from traditional Scottish cuisine to international delights. One of the things I love most about Glasgow is its accessibility. The city is incredibly walkable, which is perfect for someone like me who enjoys exploring on foot. Whether it's wandering through the bustling city centre, strolling along the River Clyde, or discovering hidden gems in the West End, there's always something new to see and experience. Another aspect I love about Glasgow is its parks and green spaces, like Kelvingrove Park and Glasgow Green. These areas provide a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, offering a chance to unwind in nature. I love going on picnics with friends, reading a book, or simply watching the adorable pups stroll by on a sunny day. Living in Glasgow has been a truly enriching experience.
