Laura Meldrum, Solicitor

Laura is a solicitor in the Employment & Pensions Unit for Anderson Strathern LLP, which provides full service legal and strategic business advice to international businesses, private companies, public bodies, not-for-profit organisations, individuals and families. Laura graduated from Strathclyde in 2013, having studied Law (LLB) (from which she graduated in 2012) and the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice. In addition to her role at Anderson Strathern, Laura is Vice President of the Scottish Young Lawyers' Association.

My course prepared me for the working world by...

It provided me with experimental learning opportunities. I was able to put theory into practice by taking part in the University’s law clinic – the largest in Scotland. As a member of the executive committee of the Law Clinic, and the appointed training officer, I was given the opportunity to develop skills beyond those I obtained as a result of the course itself including people management and interpersonal skills.

I got my job...

Through an ability to demonstrate that beyond academic ability I had practical ability to meet clients, write letters, prepare court documents and research real legal problems.

Through studying at Strathclyde I had access to a number of academics who were also practising solicitors. This was invaluable as I created a network of legal professionals before leaving University.

I'm responsible for...

My own success. I think this is a motto young professionals should follow. If you want something, regardless of your area of practice, you need to work hard for it.

Young professionals should make the most of every opportunity made available to them – attend seminars at lunchtime or in the evening, be the awkward person at the networking event and speak to people who aren’t your peers. I have found the best way to develop is to throw myself in the deep end and that is exactly what I have done thus far in my short career.

The best part of my job is...

The ever-changing landscape of both employment law and the legal profession. No two days are ever the same - it’s exciting to be involved in a profession and practice area facing an unprecedented period of change. As clients demand more value for money, developments in technology create further challenges and the use of alternative business structures increase competition, I’m fascinated by the role I have to play in tackling these issues and considering the future of the profession.

As the Vice President of the Scottish Young Lawyers’ Association I keep a keen eye on these developments and strive to voice the views of young lawyers in Scotland.

The most memorable moment of my career so far is...

Being asked to sit on the committee organising the Commonwealth Law Conference, which took place in Glasgow in 2015. Along with Lord Gill, Lord Pentland, Lord Woolman and many other influential people in the profession I assisted in choosing speakers and topics for the conference. This was an excellent opportunity to represent the views of young lawyers in Scotland and one that I very much enjoyed.

My best memory from studying at Strathclyde is...

Being nominated for the LawWorks and Attorney General Student Awards 2012. The Executive Committee at the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic were nominated for the ‘Best Contribution by a Team of Students’ award. We won the award which recognised our contribution to access to justice in Scotland.

The Law Clinic sent us on a trip to the Awards Ceremony, held at the House of Commons. It is a memory I will treasure for the rest of my life.

I would advise prospective students to choose my course and study at Strathclyde because...

It provides so many experimental learning opportunities allowing students to put the theory of law into practice. Having commenced my law degree at another university – and lasting only a few months – I can vouch that the Law School at Strathclyde’s open door policy provides an unrivalled education due to the approachability of those teaching there.
