Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering Marine Robotics Society (MRS) found by ambitious Students developing autonomous marine vehicles with NAOME support.
It is a great pleasure to announce a newly founded student’s society named Marine Robotics Society (MRS) belonging to NAOME, which is officially registered in Student Union.
The society, founded by PhD student Marvin Wright (President) and Hongbo Hou (Treasurer) and supported by two academic advisors Dr Byongug and Dr Saishuai Dai, provides an opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate students to work and learn together about marine robotic systems and related topics. This Society has currently 11 members (9 UG and PGR students + 2 NAOME staff) and keen to design and develop an autonomous marine vehicle which is a highly challenging topic in the current maritime sector.
With the group’s core knowledge, the Society has already done a small pilot project with which a model ship was built and programmed with a simple obstacle avoiding control algorithm.

As a pilot project, the society aims to develop an autonomous surface vehicle, which is a highly relevant and challenging topic in the maritime sector. The next stage design can be outlined below.
It is also worth mentioning that this pilot project will not remain as a student-driven club project, but the product and knowledge obtained from this project will be further used for proposing a larger scale project as well as students’ competition, etc. The head of department, Professor Feargal Brennan, announced support for the Marine Robotics Society.
