Media & Communication student Xingyu Zhao

Xingyu is a graduate from the MLitt Media & Communication programme at the University of Strathclyde

Tell us a little bit about your background...

I am from China, my undergraduate major is Communication, majoring in Fashion Communication. After graduating, I joined a leading information consultancy firm in China, where I continued my work in media and communications, specializing in the dissemination of trends and information related to textiles and fashion.

What drew you towards undertaking a Masters degree?

To me, media and communication is a noble field, resembling a vast network that has evolved from oral traditions through the advent of mass media such as radio and television, and now to social media. This expansive web of media not only grows larger and more influential but has also become central to commercial operations in contemporary society, thereby attracting significant attention to its social responsibilities.

In this rapidly evolving era, I am eager to pursue a Masters degree to broaden and enhance my understanding of media theories and professional skills. By continuing my education, I aim to grasp the latest information and trends within the global media landscape and apply these skills in my future professional practice.

Tell us about the format of the programme. What was a typical week like?

My experience with the study format at Strathclyde was both freeing and fulfilling. Our courses mainly consisted of lectures and seminars. Each week, we prepared by following a reading list provided by our instructors, engaging in independent study and exploration. This often included group work and case studies as well. In lectures, our instructors would patiently impart new knowledge. During seminars, we engaged in discussions based on specific weekly topics, where everyone expressed their thoughts. I found this incredibly meaningful as it offered us the opportunity to consider the same issues from the diverse perspectives of classmates from different backgrounds, listening to their unique insights. This experience was truly fantastic because everyone brought such diverse and interesting perspectives. It consistently provided me with fresh insights and new ways of thinking about various issues.

Tell us a little bit about your dissertation topic...

My dissertation focused on the diffusion of sustainable fashion on platform X. As environmental pollution and resource wastage increasingly capture public attention, the concept of sustainability has become more crucial. This notion not only represents an innovative approach but also influences individual consumer behaviors and environmental conservation. Despite many designers and brands committing to eco-friendliness and ethics, true sustainable fashion communication still faces numerous challenges and misconceptions. Under the guidance of Professor Lesley Henderson, I collected and analyzed tweets from influencers on platform X about sustainable fashion. My research revealed challenges in sustainable fashion communication, highlighting gaps in public understanding and proposing alternative approaches to increase engagement.

What was the academic support at Strathclyde like?

I found the academic support at Strathclyde to be comprehensive and effective. The university offers an extensive array of databases, literature, and software that students can access for free. Additionally, there is support available for writing, language learning, and internships at no extra cost. I participated in an online language class designed specifically for international students, which was incredibly helpful as I was just beginning to tackle academic writing in English. Furthermore, the university’s library and study rooms provided great spaces for independent study, group meetings, and relaxation.

What are your hopes for the future?

In the future, I plan to continue working in media and communications. My dissertation on sustainable fashion and media communications has particularly deepened my interest in this area. I hope to contribute to the field using the knowledge I've acquired, striving to be a creative and responsible communicator, a keen cultural observer, and a strategic executor. I aim to influence the development of the media industry positively and meaningfully.
