Take a Smart Study Break
By Jessica MacDonald
The time of assignments and exams can be stressful for any student. You are trying to get everything done in a timely manner while also making sure to get the best marks possible, but sometimes we all need a break for our own peace of minds.
Usually, when students want to take a “study break”, they turn to Netflix for a show, a movie or even some YouTube videos. Studies over the years have shown that by watching tv, movies or on-screen entertainment of some kind can cause you to forget what you have just learned.
However, we still all need a break for our brains, and sometimes after reading a ton of lecture notes, scrolling through power points slides and listening to podcasts for hours at a time, it can feel like your brain is about to explode.
One of my personal favourite things to do when I feel like I need a break from studying is exploring. Sometimes this means a day trip out to Edinburgh or to the highlands, but during this time of year, it can be hard to take a whole day away.
I personally love museums; they have always been one of my favourite place to be. Being from rural Canada, the only museum that was really by me was the Royal Ontario Museum. I remember from a young age visiting my Aunt in Toronto for the weekend. She would often take me to the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum). Every time I would go to the ROM I was so fascinated by the artefacts they had and the exhibits that were displayed.
The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is in the west end of Glasgow, which is either a short subway ride away or a forty-five-minute walk. This is a great place to go because it is open from 10-5pm daily throughout the week and is not too far away from Strathclyde. The best thing about this is the entry is free making it accessible for everyone!
This past week instead of being in the library and watching a Netflix show for my study break, I have been bringing my laptop to the museum, doing some work and grabbing a coffee. When I feel as though I need a break from my work I simply take a tour around the museum and look and the many amazing exhibits Kelvingrove has to offer.
So, what are you waiting for? Take a break from studying and go see this museum, I promise that you won’t be disappointed.
