If we are to stem the rising tide of mental illness in Scotland and elsewhere, we need to go beyond thinking what individuals can do on their own to improve their mental health.  Instead, we should consider much more carefully how society should change for the benefit of mental health.  Reflecting on social psychiatric research conducted after the Second World War about the socioeconomic determinants of mental illness, Professor Matthew Smith suggests that instituting a universal basic income or UBI might be one possible solution to our mental health crisis.
