Strathclyde Business SchoolStudent case studies

Hanne Pinholt

My aim of doing the MBA was to get a better understanding what it means to do business in an international environment, and how different areas of business interact. I also wanted to have a theoretical update on a high level in respect to business and management. It was also important to me to expand my international network and to learn how other companies run their business. Another important element for me was to be able to study the MBA outside working time – at weekends, for example – as I was not able to take a lot of time out of my daily working life.

When I started my studies, I was based in Zurich where I worked as Global HR Business Partner in Nycomed (now Takeda). During my MBA I was also based in Johannesburg in South Africa. After finalising my MBA I was based in Barcelona in Spain, where I was working as Global HR Director in Avon Automotive. Now I am based in Luxembourg.

I chose Strathclyde because it was an international programme and because it gave an all-round introduction to all areas of running a business in an international environment. As I already had a qualification from Copenhagen Business School, I wanted to attend an international programme outside Denmark. As I was living in Switzerland at that time I explored what was on the market and it turned out Strathclyde was a good fit with my needs.

The Strathclyde programme fully met my requirements. I very much liked the international environment with participants coming from different countries and teachers coming from different backgrounds and nationalities. By now I have a much better understanding of what it actually means to run a business in an international environment and this is very helpful for me in my day to day work. I also understand much better what different departments do such as Finance, Marketing, and Operations.

I found the case studies to be a very important part of the programme as I got the opportunity to work closely with other students who had a different approach and background to me. This gave me a good opportunity to discuss in further detail different angles about the specific case studies presented. It was also a nice opportunity to learn about each student’s particular background and experience.

Now I have a much better understanding of the interaction between different areas and backgrounds in an international company. I understand what I have to be aware of in an international environment and how things interact.

For me the MBA programme fully confirmed to me that an international career is very exciting and this is what I enjoy. Working with different nationalities is a nice opportunity to learn and expand my horizons. Just as I have a much better theoretical background to understand what it actually means to do business in an international environment, now I understand the links and interactions between the different departments.

I would highly recommend the Strathclyde MBA programme. I very much enjoyed both the content and the set-up. You get a good understanding of all main areas of running a business and this is very helpful in my day to day work. Now I have a much better understanding of the financial impact, consequences of marketing strategy and so on. It really made the programme that participants came from very different companies and international backgrounds, and I have also made friends for life during my two years of study.
