Following the outcome of the European Union Referendum on 23 June, the Government has recently issued a statement which confirms that there has been no change to the rights and status of EU nationals in the UK. The statement also confirms the expectation that, when Britain does leave the EU, the legal status of EU nationals living in the UK will be protected and answers some ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ for EU nationals. The statement can be found on the Government website.

The University’s Financial Year ends on 31 July. If you initiate or approve financial transactions, please be aware of the processing deadlines; it may be important for your Department’s budgetary position and the University’s year-end financial position that certain transactions are fully processed and approved on FMS in the current financial year. Goods receipting and invoice approval are key FMS tasks to undertake promptly in the run-up to the year-end. Colleagues should also note that, in order to support necessary system updates at the year-end, FMS will be unavailable from 12noon on Friday 29 July, until 9am on Monday 1 August.

The annual departmental accommodation survey takes place during the month of July. The purpose of the survey is to confirm the accuracy of data held in the space management database for all rooms allocated to each department for the 2015/16 academic year. The data will be used in a range of sector and university reporting and its accuracy is vital. Colleagues are asked to help their departmental survey administrator(s) to update the record of data. Departmental room allocations and details, along with the relevant guidance documents, can be accessed by logging into the Estates portal. If you note any errors in the data for the rooms you work in, please email your departmental survey administrator via the link at the top of the portal page. If you need to change the room that is identified as your primary workplace location in the ‘Occupants’ column, you can find instructions in the Staff workplace location guidance document.

Myplace will be unavailable between 8am and 12noon on Wednesday 17 August. This is to allow colleagues in ISD infrastructure to perform the annual ‘session change’, where the 2016/17 service will be moved to, and the 2015/16 service currently at that address will be moved to There will also be a minor maintenance upgrade to the Myplace service which will not significantly change existing features or add new features.

Information Services will be upgrading to SharePoint 2013 over the weekend of 20 and 21 August.  Primary site contacts are currently reviewing test migrated content on the 2013 servers. Following the upgrade, existing site collection URLs will remain unchanged under and the majority of site collections will initially retain the 2010 user interface. Site collection administrators will be able to decide when they wish to activate the 2013 user interface. If any site collections have not activated the 2013 interface by Friday 25 November, the new interface will be implemented on their behalf. Further information can be found on the SharePoint 2013 upgrade site or by contacting the SharePoint team.

The SIMS Project is continuing to work towards the implementation of SRM (Student Relationship Management) functionality in September. The Oracle PeopleSoft software is a highly flexible tool which offers opportunities for configuration and customisation to meet the University’s needs. A short video has been created to demonstrate the look and feel of the system to colleagues. As the project build continues, we hope to share further examples of specific system functionality. The products is well-established globally, with 4,800 institutions using Oracle across 28 countries.

The University’s Strategic Plan (2015-2020) sets out expectations for the future citation impact of Strathclyde research. A Research Publications Guidance document has been created, aimed at research-active staff. The guidance sets out best practice in the management of research publications and also when managing the scholarly communications lifecycle in general. All research-active staff are encouraged to review the guidance, as implementation of such best practice can ensure individual authors maximise the potential citation impact of their research. The Research Publications Guidance is available from the RKES Portal.

·         Institutional Sponsorship 2016/17

The EPSRC has awarded the University funding to support the alignment of Strathclyde’s Engineering & Physical Sciences research with the Prosperity Outcomes Framework. A call for proposals is now open, which seeks to support pump-priming/feasibility type studies, with a deadline of Monday 29 August. Further information, including the application form, is available on the RKES Portal. Please email Tanya Kay with any questions.

·         Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Institutional Sponsorship Award

The University has been allocated £240,000 by the EPSRC under a one-off institutional sponsorship scheme to facilitate increased engagement with international development activities. Proposals are invited for pilot projects that will enable the research community to realise opportunities that will arise from future GCRF and other international development calls. A total of £60,000 is available in this round and we envisage funding up to four projects, each with a value of £15,000. The funding must be spent in its entirety by 31 March 2017, with at least a third to be spent by 31 December 2016. The deadline for applications is 12noon on Tuesday 16 August. Please email Clare McLaren, Research and Knowledge Exchange Services, for a copy of the guidelines and application form.
