Library updates 

Date Update

Time slots for bookable rooms are as follows:


  • 08:00–13:00
  • 13:00–18:00

During 24/7 Library opening (22 November to 17 December 2021 inclusive) time slots for bookable rooms are:

  • 08:00–13:00
  • 13:00–18:00
  • 18:00–00:00
  • 00:00–06:00

As of Monday 13 September 2021, some restrictions remain in the Library:

  • Face coverings must be worn at all times, unless medically exempt
  • Maintain physical distance (1m+) from others
  • There is no food allowed anywhere in the Library

The Library is suitable for solo study and for working in pairs in large discussion rooms only. We are unable to accommodate groups of three or more at this time.

Currently, we can accommodate:

  • A maximum of 2 people at a time in our large bookable rooms
  • 1 person at a time in our small bookable rooms

Computers, desks, printers and books/resources are all available for you to use. Please wash and/or sanitise your hands and sit only where there are green ticks.

Skills Boost sessions will continue to take place online via Zoom.


The majority of remaining Covid restrictions in Scotland have now been lifted.

The country moved beyond 'Level 0' rules at midnight on Monday 9 August.

Some restrictions still remain in the University Library.

For the time being, face coverings still need to be worn. We also ask visitors to the Library to maintain social distancing. We are currently open to support solo study only, and not group work or socialising.


On Monday 19 July 2021 the Glasgow City Council area moved to COVID Protection Level 0.

As of Monday 26 July 2021, we will no longer be quarantining books returned to the Library, or books used by students in the Library. 


The Click and Collect service will come to an end on the final day of August resits.

If you wish to use Click and Collect you must place your request before 15:00 on Monday 9 August 2021.

Our postal loan service is available to registered staff and students in priority groups who are living in the UK or Republic of Ireland.


On Saturday 5 June 2021 the Glasgow City Council area moved to COVID Protection Level 2 restrictions. 

Visitors to the Library are still required to wear face coverings. The Library is open to support solo study only. Group work/socialising is not permitted. 


Please be aware, we are not currently processing new subscription memberships and our membership of the SCONUL Access scheme is currently suspended. 


On Monday 26 April 2021, the Glasgow City Council area will move to COVID Protection Level 3 restrictions.

From this date:

The Library will be open:

  • From 09:00 to 21:00 Monday–Friday
  • From 09:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays and Sundays

Visitors to the Library may:

  • Study solo.
  • Use computers and printers.
  • Browse shelves and borrow books.
  • Book study rooms (solo use only).
  • Use water dispensers to fill your own bottle.

Visitors to the Library may not:

  • Study in groups or socialise.
  • Eat or drink (except water).

We are still asking all visitors to:

  • Wear a face covering.
  • Wash/sanitise hands frequently.
  • Keep a distance from others.
  • Pay attention to signs.
  • Listen to instructions from staff.

Click & Collect, postal loans and Freepost returns are still available for those who wish to use them.



We plan to extend our opening hours from the week beginning Monday 26 April 2021. See our opening hours page for more information.


We are appealing to recent graduates to return any University Library books they still have at home. 

You can do this in person or by post. We won't charge you for overdue items.


The Library is assisting with a Covid-19 research project led by the Department of Architecture.


From Monday 25 January 2021 we will reinstate our Click and Collect service.

The Library building is open from 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays (Monday–Friday) for solo study only.

Only Library staff may access the bookshelves.


From Tuesday 5 January, mainland Scotland moved from Covid Level 4 restrictions to a temporary Lockdown, with new guidance to stay at home except for essential purposes. 

  • The Library has been open since 4 January, and during this period and throughout lockdown browsing of bookshelves by customers is not permitted. 
  • From 11 January, the Library will revert to opening Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm and will be closed at weekends.
  • In addition we will also temporarily withdraw the click and collect service until further data becomes available on the new COVID variants and in which ways they are more transmissible.
  • Library enquiry and IT support services will revert to providing remote support as was the case during the initial lockdown in spring and summer 2020.

We are taking these steps to protect staff and students and may introduce additional safety measures or restrictions informed by an assessment of the increased risks associated with the new variants of the virus.

Please continue to social distance and wear a face covering when in the Library.


The Glasgow City council area will transition to COVID protection Level 4 restrictions on Saturday 26 December 2020 at 00:01

During Level 4 restrictions, browsing of bookshelves by customers is not permitted.

If you want to borrow from the Library collection please speak to a member of staff who will assist.

The Library Shop is classed as non-essential retail. It is currently closed until further notice.

Please continue to social distance and wear a face covering when in the Library.


The Glasgow City council area transitioned to COVID protection Level 3 restrictions on Friday 11 December 2020 at 18:00. 

From Saturday 12 December, customers are welcome to browse our bookshelves and retrieve items themselves. Please continue to social distance and wear a face covering when in the Library.


The is classed as non-essential retail. It is currently closed until further notice.


The Glasgow City council area, which includes the Strathclyde campus, will move in to COVID protection Level 4 restrictions from 18:00 GMT on Friday 20-11-2020.

From Saturday 21-11-2020 until further notice, Library customers (students and staff) are not permitted to access/browse bookshelves in the Library.

We will continue with our Click & Collect service and are working to implement an in-Library book collection service.

If you're visiting us make sure to follow our new rules for access.


Please note all Library facilities are for solo study only. All group rooms are now available for use by one person at a time.


The Library Shop will re-open on Wednesday 26 August 2020.


Room bookings

  • The Library is reopening to support solo working. For the time being there are no group study facilities. Please continue to use collaboration tools (such as Zoom) for group work.
  • Though some discussion rooms are available to book, they are intended for use by one person only.
  • 2 slots are available to book per room per day: a morning slot and an afternoon slot. Rooms are closed for cleaning between 12:00 and 14:00.
  • A room booking is not a guarantee of entry to the Library.
  • You must scan in to your booked room within 30 minutes of your booking, otherwise you will be locked out. Please arrive at the Library in good time for your booking, in case you have to queue. 

The Andersonian Library will re-open on Monday 24 August 2020.

  • Please be prepared to queue when you visit.
  • You must wear a face covering inside the Library building, except where an exemption applies (as defined in the legislation).
  • One-way systems are in place on stairs and in corridors. Please pay attention to signs and instructions from staff.
  • Please wash your hands and/or use hand sanitiser frequently during your visit. We have provided hand sanitiser and wipes for desks and IT equipment.
  • For the time being there will be no food allowed in any part of the Library. 
  • We may be required to release to NHS Scotland Library entry and exit data in support of the Test & Protect service.
  • The Library is reopening to support solo working. For the time being there are no group study facilities. Please continue to use collaboration tools (such as Zoom) for group work.

06-07-2020 We are working towards the safe re-opening of the Library. Initially, we will begin with a Freepost book return service & click-and-collect service for print materials. We will publish full details of our plans to re-open as soon as we are able to.
