Description

There is an international scientific and policy consensus that the best solution for long-term disposal of higher activity radioactive waste from our energy and research programmes is deep geological disposal. Nonetheless, securing that solution has proved controversial, here and internationally. Nuclear energy and consequent waste generation and disposal are framed by international treaties and the institutional structures and processes enshrined in the EU, including via Euratom. Tackling radioactive waste management effectively appears to be a major challenge to policy, planning, public engagement and delivery processes. The issues involved will be reviewed and current status considered in this presentation by Campbell Gemmell.

Campbell Gemmell

Campbell is one of the Deputy Chairs of the UK Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) and former CEO of SEPA. Prof. Gemmell will look at the work and roles of the various players involved, setting the ongoing challenges against the current and possible future waste, policy, political and constitutional backdrop.
