Emmy for Scottish TV pioneer Alexander Bain

Alexander Bain - 1874

Ivan Ruddock, Honorary Reader in the Department of Physics and President of Kirkintilloch and District Society of Antiquaries, has been explaining the pioneering work of Alexander Bain, a 19th century engineer who invented the fax machine, in the week that he receives an Emmy, almost 140 years after his death. In a 2012 article in Scottish Local History journal, Ivan identified Alexander Bain as 'the real father of television', and last year was involved in the decision by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for the Emmy to be accepted on Bain’s behalf by East Dunbartonshire Council.

Alexander Bain was awarded a Technology and Engineering Emmy on Friday 8th January at a ceremony in Las Vegas, for inventing "the concept of scanning for image transmission."
