Strathclyde top of Physics REF 2014

The Department of Physics at Strathclyde has been awarded the highest ranking quality rating in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, an assessment based on grade point average.

We were ranked top out of 41 submissions from across the UK, followed by Oxford (second) and Nottingham, Edinburgh and St Andrews (joint third). The national recognition of our strengths in basic research and its exploitation is outstanding news for Strathclyde as an internationally leading technological university. It demonstrates the value of the Department of Physics' approach to building strong teams in fundamental research with the capabilities of creating real impact in society.

A truly eye-catching performance was put in by the University of Strathclyde's physics department, which ranks first overall (joint fourth on out put and second on impact), with a GPA of 3.35.

The number one ranking follows recent successes in grant awards, such as our participation in all four funded EPSRC Quantum Technology hubs as well as our involvement in the future leadership of the National Physical Laboratory.
