Information for estranged students (studying without family support)

main content

Are you an applicant or student who is estranged from their family, studying without family support?

At the University, we recognise that studying in the absence of family support can be difficult, and may cause you to worry about finances, accommodation and emotional support. At Strathclyde, we were the first university in Scotland to sign the Pledge to Stand Alone who support adults who are estranged from their family, to show our commitment to supporting estranged students.

We have a range of support services available for estranged students, and also a named contact who can support you through your transition to University and throughout your studies.  We provide the following support for estranged students:

  • Tours of the University and subject departments before you start or even apply, to give you a feel of the University and campus.
  • Guaranteed 365 days per year in Strathclyde student accommodation.
  • A partnership with the Unite Foundation whom you can apply to via the University for 3 years free accommodation (no rent and no bills) in Unite student accommodation for 365 days per year.  Please note, eligible students must be aged 25 or under, have UK home fee status, and be studying their first Undergraduate degree.
  • A named adviser for estranged students whom you can contact at any time prior to studying or during your studies for advice and guidance, and information on support services, including financial, academic, and personal support.
  • Priority for the University discretionary fund, which can be accessed through the Student Financial Support Team at the University for students who are in financial difficulty.
  • Priority for interview to become a paid Student Ambassador for the duration of your degree.  Student Ambassadors are invited to work at various events throughout the academic year such as Welcome Week and Open Days.

If you are an estranged student looking to apply to the University, or are already studying at the University and wish to find out more about the support above, please contact the named adviser for estranged students Louise Martin on louise.martin.100@strath.ac.uk or 0141 548 4050.
