Personal statement
Richard A Black is a biomedical engineer with over 25 years’ experience in the field, and a long-standing interest in the fluid mechanics of the cardiovascular system in health and disease. He graduated BSc (Hons) Engineering Science from the University of Edinburgh, and gained his PhD from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Liverpool, where he was lecturer in Medical Device Design, and latterly Principal Investigator at the UK Centre for Tissue Engineering.
Dr Black joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Strathclyde in 2007 as part of a University Research Strategy Initiative to promote research in the fields of In-vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices, Tissue Engineering and Advanced Biomaterials. The Department is host to the UK Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Centre for Doctoral Training in Medical Devices and Healthcare Technologies, for which he is currently the Academic Director. A Chartered Scientist and Engineer, Dr Black is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. He is Editor-in-Chief of Medical Engineering & Physics, one of three journal publications of the Institute (www.ipem.ac.uk; www.medengphys.com).
