Personal statement

I am the Nokia Lecturer in the Institute for Energy and Environment, within the Electronic and Electrical Engineering department.

My previous roles involved working on a number of research projects, including:

  • EMRP ENG52 "Smart Grid II", involving the development of phasor measurement units for distribution networks,
  • ELECTRA, involving future grid flexibility and control, and
  • ERIGrid, involving smart grid laboratory infrastructure.

Also, I conducted analysis for the Capacity to Customers (C2C) Low Carbon Networks Fund project, in partnership with Electricity North West Ltd. In particular, this role involved understanding the impact of novel automation and demand-side response schemes on system capacity and power quality, using detailed system models and monitoring data.

I am interested in communications for power systems, in particular IEC 61850, wide area communications using IP/MPLS, and phasor measurement units. I have created two open source libraries for facilitating the development and testing of IEC 61850-based systems: rapid61850 and discover.

I have also created several tools for visualising power systems concepts, including: real and reactive power, symmetrical components, the dq0 transform, and voltage harmonics.

I am a member of the IET, the IEEE, the IEEE Power & Energy Society, IEC TC57 WG10, CIGRE WG B5.64, and the IEEE Open Source Software Task Force.
