Personal statement

Day to day management of the BPU facility: The Biological Procedures Unit (BPU) is an ethical multispecies conventional unit licensed to house animal for use in Medical research. The use of animals in research is subject to national regulation and operates on the principle of 3Rs – reduce, refine, replace. There is clear recognition of the value of research using living animals for medical and veterinary advance. The UK Government and European Union, as well as grant-giving bodies such as RCUK and medical charities, recognise the need for “carefully regulated use of animals in scientific research remains of vital importance in improving our understanding of human and animal disease, and in ensuring the safety of new medicines.” Directly responsible for 5 technical staff, ensuring the provision of a professional service and high standards of animal husbandry and care. Indirectly responsible for approximately 150 Users of the facility.
