Personal statement

I joined the University in 2009. Prior to this I was a Principal Teacher in a secondary school and completed a two year secondment to the University of Glasgow between 2005-2007.  I am the Deputy Course Leader for the PGDE and the Course Leader for Secondary.  I teach across the Masters, PGDE and the BA courses.

My aim is to assist new, and etablished,  teachers in developing approaches to learning and teaching that support active learning in and outside the classroom.  I am interested in teaching geography in secondary and primary schools and in pedagogies to support understanding of sustainable development.  I have introduced 'Learning for Sustainability' across all courses and supported colleagues in developing skills in this area.

I work with a varity of approaches to support students including cooperative learning, outdoor learning and disciplinary literacy and I work in schools with teachers on cooperative learning and disciplinary literacy.

Research interests

I am interested in disciplinary literacy and how experienced teachers can be empowered to embed new literacy pedagogies into the secondary curriculum.  I am currently working in a large secondary school in Glasgow with teachers of all disciplines to improve literacy in their subject area.  In addition, I work with pedagogical frameworks that impact on student teacher learning about cooperative and collaborative pedagogies.
