Dr Kate Pyper

Teaching Fellow

Mathematics and Statistics

Personal statement

I am currently employed as a teaching assistant in the Mathematics and Statistics department and have been involved in teaching statistics classes across all levels.

My research interests focus on public health. My PhD project, in collaboration with the National Poisons Information Service, examines the variation in incidences of poisoning across the UK. I am particularly interested in applications of time series and spatial techniques to modelling the complex autocorrelation structures which can arise in human health applications.

In addition to my teaching and research duties, I am a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and am secretary of the Glasgow Local Group. I am also an active STEM ambassador, and regularly run workshops for school children to encourage them to pursue a career in science.

Projects

Supporting students during their transition to university
Pyper, Kate (Principal Investigator) Miller, Ainsley (Co-investigator) Jack, Eilidh (Co-investigator)
£1000 QAA funded project to employ a student intern to develop surveys which will help to assess discrepancies between the expectations of academics, school teachers, and incoming students. This will help to develop and understanding of the support our transitioning students need to help them succeed at university
10-Jan-2022 - 09-Jan-2024
Park's Motor Group: Student Internship
Pyper, Kate (Principal Investigator)
Recruited a student intern to help to investigate the impact of the Park's Motor Group customer base on profit.
