Dr Alison Thomson

Senior Lecturer

Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences

Personal statement

I joined the University of Strathclyde as a part-time academic in 2005; previously I worked full-time as a pharmacist in the NHS.  Currently, I have a 0.6 appointment at Strathclyde and I have retained a 0.1 NHS appointment.  My area of interest for both teaching and research is clinical pharmacokinetics.  My teaching aims to enable pharmacists to interpret drug concentration measurements and advise on drug dosage regimens for individual patients.  My research interests involve using population pharmacokinetic methods to develop dosage guidelines from drug concentration data, particularly data generated in the course of routine clinical practice.

Teaching

I teach on both the undergraduate Master of Pharmacy course and the postgraduate Master of Clinical Pharmacy course.  My main area is clinical pharmacokinetics but I am also involved in teaching evidence based medicine and some areas of therapeutics (interprofessional learning).

Research interests

My research interests line in the area of clinical pharmacokinetics and particularly in the use of Bayesian and population pharmacokinetic methods to design drug dosage regimens for individual patients and patient populations.
