Personal statement
My area of expertise is intelligent system applications in energy, covering condition monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics, active network management and wider smart grid applications. My research leadership roles include being Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Power Networks and Smart Grids, which is a partnership between Strathclyde and Imperial College, London. I am also Academic Director of the Advanced Nuclear Research Centre at the University of Strathclyde. This is delivering a range of solutions for through-life plant management to UK and international industrial partners. As part of this activity I am the Academic Principal Investigator on the EPSRC Prosperity Partnership programme entitled "Delivering Enhanced Through-Life Nuclear Asset Management".
I lead the UKRI EnergyREV programme. This brings together 22 universities and 32 investigators to deliver novel research and innovation that will accelerate the uptake, value and impact of Smart Local Energy Systems. EnergyREV is a key component of the UK Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund’s Prospering from the Energy Revolution (PFER) programme. PFER intends to prove investable, scalable local business models using integrated approaches to deliver cleaner, cheaper energy services.
Within the University I am a Deputy Associate Principal for Research, Knowledge Exchange and Innovation with a remit including REF 2021 preparation and EPSRC relationship management. I am also co-Director of the Institute for Energy and Environment and Academic Director of the Low Carbon Power and Energy Programme within the Technology and Innovation Centre. Previously, from August 2011 until June 2014, I was the Head of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
