David Coyle was appointed as Finance Director in 1990. He has contributed to the development of finance processes and policies in the higher education sector for many years. He was a member, from inception, of the Joint Costing and Pricing Steering Group (JCPSG), which was instrumental in the implementation of the Transparency Review of Research Costing (TRAC) methodology used by the sector. He also spent eight years as a member of the Universities Scotland Funding Policy Group, which provides advice to Universities Scotland on future funding issues affecting higher education.
David Coyle has been Scottish representative on the British Universities Finance Directors Group (BUFDG) Executive Board and was Chairman of the BUFDG Benchmarking Group. He is a former Bank of Scotland "Finance Director of the Year" - an award given in recognition of his contribution to the financial management of Strathclyde.
A graduate in economics and politics from the University of Glasgow, David Coyle spent his early career in industry, holding a variety of financial positions in companies as diverse as BL Cars, Rolls Royce, National Semiconductor and Motorola. He qualified as an accountant in 1983, subsequently becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Management Accountants (FCMA).
