Personal statement

My area of expertise is intelligent system applications in power engineering, covering condition monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics, active network management and wider smart grid applications. My research leadership roles include Director of the EDF Energy Advanced Diagnostics Centre at Strathclyde and leader of the Smart Grid theme within the UK EPSRC Energy Networks Hub. Additionally, I am the principal investigator and leader of the EPSRC Energy Networks Grand Challenge programme entitled "The Autonomic Power System", researching the next generation of autonomous power systems. I am also the Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Power Networks and Smart Grids, which is a partnership between Strathclyde and Imperial College, London.

Within the University I am co-Director of the Institute for Energy and Environment, Academic Director of the Power and Energy Programme within the Technology and Innovation Centre and from August 2011 until June 2014 I was the Head of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
