The Evening Programme Online contains the perfect mix of classes to start you on the path to learn a new skill or develop an interest.
Our classes have been designed to recreate as near to a face to face teaching situation as possible and are intended as live, online versions of our popular campus-based classes which take place at a designated time slot each week. These classes will be delivered using 'Zoom'.
We are also continuing to offer our long-standing, credit-bearing, online Genealogy and Creative Writing classes via Myplace, the University's virtual learning environment. This is a user-friendly platform and all you need is a broadband internet connection. These classes provide lessons using downloadable learning materials and are designed as an immersive learning experience where students can interact with each other on a daily basis if they choose. There is regular tutor input via online forums and 'live chats'.
Our classes are open entry, meaning no qualifications are necessary and over 1,000 students learn with us each year, so why not join them?

We understand some students may be unsure about learning online using Zoom or have lots of questions about whether it is right for them. To address this, we have put together some typical queries and answers below:
Not very, you will need access to a computer, tablet or smartphone. A desktop or laptop PC or Mac with a built in webcam is ideal as it will allow you to see all your fellow students at the one time (you may also wish to use a set of headphones/earbuds). If you are using a mobile device (e.g. tablet or phone) you will need to download the Zoom app first. Zoom is the platform we are using to deliver these classes. If you are using a phone you will only be able to see one person at a time. It is easy to navigate and use. We are finding that many people are using it to communicate with friends and family and for a host of other reasons – you may even have already have used it.
Please note: you do NOT need to sign up to a Zoom account, the University has invested in this as the means of online delivery and as such is the owner of the access to Zoom. Access to the Zoom lessons will be automatic. If you plan on using a tablet or phone for the classes, you need only download the free Zoom app.
Yes! Zoom training will be made available to those who have booked onto a class. More details of these sessions for the Evening Programme will be provided in due course.
Given that we realise this will be new to a lot of our students, if you are unable to get up and running with Zoom, we will refund your fee in full.
Teaching will be ‘live’ and classes will be offered at a set day and time each week, just like in CLL. You login at the designated class time and you will see your fellow students and your tutor on screen.
Feedback from tutors suggests that our usual 2 hour class format is too long for online delivery so we have shortened the majority of classes to 1.5 hours (with a short comfort break) and some others to one hour at a time. The details of the length of each class will be available via MyCLL.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a CLL class without this! The classes are designed to be fully interactive and you can ask questions of the tutor and they of you – just like you are all in the same room. You can even put up your virtual hand!
We intend to keep numbers small, but the number of places available in each class will vary based on the nature of the class. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. If the class is full, please ensure that you sign up for email alerts on that class and we will contact you if and when further places or additional sessions become available.
Tutors may wish to post pre-class reading materials, extra resources and weblinks for you to enjoy. These can be accessed via your MyCLL account once the class is confirmed as running.
