What does this course offer?

Each week of this course has 21 hours of task-based communicative and collaborative learning, during which you'll be monitored by a team of experienced tutors.

The focus is on real situations and tasks that you'll be likely to perform in your future studies. 

Learning and Teaching

Your individual learning needs will be identified and you'll be helped to set up an effective self-study plan.

You'll receive feedback on your progress and support for your learning in one-to-one tutorials. Your progress will be assessed regularly through coursework.

The final assessment for the course will give you the opportunity to meet the language requirement for your main degree at Strathclyde. 

Course Content

The programme covers the following academic English and study skills areas, as well as work on general English language improvement as required:

  • strategies for understanding lectures and talks;
  • note-taking and summarising texts;
  • participating actively in seminar discussions;
  • giving effective presentations and talks;
  • improving reading skills and strategies
  • writing a variety of text types: reports, essays, annotated bibliographies, summaries, and reflections;
  • using the library and the internet for research;
  • developing reference and citation skills;
  • expectations of students in UK Universities; and
  • avoiding plagiarism and developing reference and citation skills.

Online Pre-sessional Autumn Start 2020

Applications for the Online Pre-sessional programme are now open. Applicants add an Online Pre-sessional application to their main course application on the Application Portal. Please follow the instructions in the Applicant Guide for Online Pre-sessional Applications document. Agents can make applications for students by searching for the correct programme on the Agent Portal (Agent Guide for Online Pre-sessional Applications). 

The Pre-sessional online programmes for Postgraduate students are:

  • Non-graduating Pre-sessional English Modules 1-3 (online) September Full-Time PG; and
  • Non-graduating Pre-sessional English Modules 2-3 (online) October Full-Time PG.

The Pre-sessional online programmes for Undergraduate students are:

  • Non-graduating Pre-sessional English Modules 1-3 (online) September Full-Time UG; and
  • Non-graduating Pre-sessional English Modules 2-3 (online) October Full-Time UG.

The strict deadline for applications will be 5.00pm UK time on the 9th October for Online Modules 2-3.

Learning Online Pre-sessional course with ELT was a great experience. I have learned a lot from this course with super great teachers and helpful ELT staff include with a great online system. The course is really useful, I have learned how to paraphrase, avoid plagiarism and how to write an effective Academic English Language which all of these can help me with my main degree. *Teaching for Foundation 3-4 plus Modules 1-3 will begin on the 8th of March, 2021. Registration and induction events will take place in week beginning 1st March, 2021.

Note: The Module 3 component is offered free of charge to applicants from all courses who go on to register on a full-time course of at least 9 months in duration and pay full overseas fees. Applicants from Foundation courses plus Modules 1-3, and from Modules 1-3 and Modules 2-3, will be required to pay the Module 3 fees in advance (£1,630). The Module 3 fee will be refunded on confirmation of continued registration and payment of full overseas fees for a full-time course of at least 9 months in duration.
