Overview

In this project, you will produce an online compendium of genome-scale metabolic models spanning the full diversity of Streptomyces, and use this to analyse their differential biological phenotypes, and potential for engineering.

Eligibility

Applicants should have either:

  • a computational or highly-numerate background with a strong, demonstrable interest in microbiology and biochemistry or
  • a strong microbiology and biochemistry background with a demonstrable capability in computing (eg through GitHub repositories/open source contributions) and mathematics

It would be an advantage if the applicant is familiar with Python and/or Matlab, and modelling of biological processes, especially using COBRA and/or COBRApy.

Project Details

Streptomycetes are highly diverse societally-important bacteria, the source of the majority of our antibiotics, and their natural diversity presents great opportunity for discovery of novel antibiotics that could relieve the global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis. Despite their significance, we have only recently resolved their taxonomy to enable the detailed pangenomic analysis and meaningful comparison of whole-genome metabolic capability that could underpin rational engineering of these organisms in an industrial biotechnology context.

In this project, you will produce an online compendium of genome-scale metabolic models spanning the full diversity of Streptomyces, and use this to analyse their differential biological phenotypes, and potential for engineering.
