Applicants to the JSPS Summer Programme must be a UK national, and must be enrolled in a PhD or Mphil programme at a UK university at the time of the application. Both full-time and part-time students are eligible.
Applicants must receive acceptance in advance from their host researcher in Japan, and must aspire to become a researcher in the future.
Those who have previously been awarded a fellowship under JSPS Fellowship Programmes are not eligible.
All fields of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, physical and engineering sciences are included under this programme. The candidate must either be majoring or conducting research in a related field.
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) is an independent administrative institution, established by way of a national law for the purpose of contributing to the advancement of science in all fields of the natural and social sciences and the humanities.
The JSPS Summer Programme provides opportunities for young researchers from North American and European countries to receive an orientation on Japanese culture and research systems and to pursue research under the guidance of host researchers at Japanese universities and research institutes over a period of two months during the summer 2020.
Value of award
Return international airfare, maintenance allowance (534,000 JPY), research support allowance (up to 158,500 JPY) and overseas travel and accident insurance policy are provided.

How to apply
- Download the application form and the appendix from the British Council Japan website.
- When you have completed your application form and the appendix (both signed), send those by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
- A letter of acceptance/invitation from your host researcher should be attached to your application, or your host researcher can send it directly to the British Council by post or email.
- A copy of the identity page of your UK passport should be attached to your application.
Applications with all attachments should be e-mailed to the above email address by 15 January 2020, 11:59pm GMT
Each applicant should be notified by e-mail of his/her application result by early March 2020.
