Eligibility

Candidates are required to have:

  • An excellent undergraduate degree with Honours in a relevant business, scientific/technological or social science subject
  • A Masters degree (or equivalent) will be strongly preferred.
  • Students may also have other relevant experience or skills which are relevant to this project.
  • All applications must be accompanied by a cover letter indicating the candidate's relevant skills/experience and how they can contribute to this research, as well as a CV and relevant qualification transcripts.
  • Students must be available to commence their academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2016
  • Two references will be required

Project Details

The convergence of Additive Manufacturing (also known as 3D Printing) with online repositories to share 3D data, open hardware licensing, and platforms to access manufacturing capacity remotely is creating an environment where innovation is flourishing.

Signalling a radical shift in the locus of innovation, the trend towards mass-customisation enabled by AM and 3DP technology highlights new opportunities for value creation and capture which were not available under the mass-manufacturing paradigm. In contrast with traditional, closed models of production and consumption which assume that a single enterprise both owns and manufactures artefacts which are sold to consumers who will use them without modification, for example, widespread access to low cost printers, open data repositories and digital design software offers the possibilities of unprecedented levels of bespoke customizations and adaptation of existing designs.

In this context, new research is required to assess how companies (re)design their practices and business models to facilitate open innovation and user input while avoiding the potential risks and liabilities brought about by these highly disruptive but highly promising technologies. The project will rely on a case-study based, in-depth qualitative methodology aimed at tracing the emergence of action patterns which underpin value creation and capture in 3D Printing.

The student will be joining a thriving interdisciplinary team (including Business, Engineering, Law and Sociology) associated with the RCUK CREATe project on “Open Business Models for 3D Printing Industries”. S/he will also have access to prestigious academic international research networks as well as enjoying close links to the £90mTechnology and Innovation Centre (TIC) and its partner companies, the EPSRC Advanced Manufacturing Catapult, and the Advanced Forming Centre (AFRC)
