Enhance your knowledge of statistics and data analysis
This module is for staff looking to enhance their knowledge of statistics and data analysis in order to teach the SQA Higher 'Applications of Mathematics'.
Assuming no prior knowledge, we'll look at the basic statistical concepts necessary to address research questions, interpret the results, and make valid conclusions. By the end of the module, you'll have a good understanding of the basic concepts and know how and when to use them. You'll also have the ability to apply them using a statistical software package.
What you'll learn
This module covers:
- introduction to probability and statistics, including types of data, symmetric and skewed distributions, graphical and numerical summaries of data, the Normal distribution
- basic probability: probability definitions and rules, Venn diagrams, decision trees
- correlation and regression
- hypothesis testing: parametric tests, p-values and confidence intervals
- application of the above using statistical software
Delivery
This module will be available online from Monday 22nd April 2024 to Friday 14th June 2024. You'll choose to do the course using either Minitab or R Studio statistical software. You'll have access to software, and full teaching and learning support materials will be provided. Additional online help and support will be available.
What will I get at the end of it?
This course is worth 10 credits at SCQF Level 7. You'll receive a formal university Continuing Professional Development (CPD) transcript when you complete the module.
