Upskilling @ StrathclydeServices Operations & Simulation

What you'll learn

Organisations can see the complexity of operations in their work, bottlenecks, long process times, long waiting times, too many idle times, and often consider how useful it could be if they could try making operations smoother and more efficient by trial and error. Organisations also know that this cannot happen in reality, but there are tools that can do this for them in a model which learners can then apply the best findings to the real situation. This is what is meant by discrete event simulation (DES).

This module will show participants the power of DES and using a popular software tool (Simul8), will teach learners how to effectively simulate an operations scenario. By the end of this module, participants should be able to simulate any operations and to use simulation to study how the chosen operations can be improved.

Participants will develop an understanding of important concepts like routing with labels, batching, warm-up period, trials, distributions and experimentation with a simulation model to get better results.

While participants will specifically learn about Simul8 software, many of the concepts presented in this module are equally applicable to many other forms of simulation software. By learning simulation modelling, participants will possess a very powerful and widely applicable skill for studying and improving any operations.
