Applying with a criminal conviction
You can still apply if you have a criminal conviction. We’re committed to the fair treatment of students throughout the application process.
We’ll get in touch if you're to be made an offer and have declared a criminal conviction on your application form.
You should not declare any 'spent' convictions or any offence for which the penalty was a non custodial sentence carrying a fine of less than £1000.
However, if you've applied for a course which involves contact with vulnerable people, such as teaching, social work or medical related courses, you'll be required to undergo a detailed criminal records check. Any 'spent' convictions you have will be taken into account at this stage.
Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974, all convictions, except those which resulted in a prison sentence of more than 30 months, are regarded as 'spent' after a certain period of time and are not required to be declared. This period of time depends on the sentence imposed.
Do I have to undergo a criminal records check?
UK applicants to courses which involve contact with vulnerable people, such as teaching, social work and medical related courses will be required to register with the PVG Scheme (Protection of Vulnerable Groups).
An application pack will be sent to you automatically – generally in late June or early July. Please note that there's a charge for this service. For further information, including the current fee, go to the PVG Scheme website.
EU & international applicants
EU and International applicants to courses which involve contact with vulnerable people, such as teaching, social work and medical related courses will be required to undergo a criminal records check in their home country and supply us with a Certificate of Good Conduct.
If you have applied for a course where this is a requirement, the relevant department will contact you directly.
