We've opened the door to more engineering students as a result of the Engineering Academy, our partnership with colleges and industry.
The Academy is a programme which gives students of all ages an additional opportunity to join us at Strathclyde.
While you're a Strathclyde student, in your first year you'll complete an enhanced HNC and practical skills units with one of our college partners. Once you achieve the required qualification, you're guaranteed transfer to the second year of one of our accredited undergraduate degrees.
Engineering Academy student Andrew MacLellan is currently in the third year of his MEng degree in our Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering. He attended an internship last summer with Falkirk-based bus manufacturing company Alexander Dennis Ltd.
How did you hear about the Engineering Academy?
I was looking for options to leave school at the end of my fifth year and progress to university through several different paths. I came across the Academy when it was just starting up in the summer of 2013 and I applied to it immediately. The programme allowed me to attend college instead of taking a sixth year at school and then to progress straight into the second year of the Electronic & Electrical Engineering degree.
How has the Academy helped you?
The academy has been a great benefit in communicating with companies during the course of the degree. At Alexander Dennis, I was involved in a solo project to write a programme to improve end of line fault-finding on the bus multiplex systems.
As well as starting university a year early, the Engineering Academy assisted me in finding internships with companies and helped with improving my CV and interview skills. Right now, I am looking into research opportunities within the University and areas I can take as a fourth-year solo project.
Would you recommend the Engineering Academy to others?
I am very happy that I partook in the Engineering Academy program and I would definitely recommend it to others who are thinking about attending university.
