Postgraduate Research Experience Survey

main content

The PRES is an annual survey, devised to find out about the experience of research postgraduates.

We’re keen to make sure postgraduate students have the best possible experience while studying at Strathclyde. To do that we need your feedback to let us know what you think we are doing well and what we can do better.

The survey is designed by Advance HE. If you're working towards a postgraduate research degree, full or part time, distance learning or attending, you should be included in the survey. We need your help so we can continue to develop the courses, services and support we provide to our postgraduate students. Your views will make a difference!

Why should I take part?

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey is your chance to tell us your thoughts about your experience. The results help us compare how we are doing with other institutions, to make changes that will improve what we do in future and to keep doing the things that you value. This will help improve the experience of students like you in the future. We're also including a prize draw with a £200 and a £100 voucher to be won!

What does it cover?

The survey focusses on the student's experiences of:

  • supervision
  • resources
  • research culture
  • progress and assessment
  • responsibilities
  • research skills and professional development
  • opportunities
  • overall experience
  • personal outlook
  • demographic details

It also considers students' motivation for taking their programme and asks institutionally relevant questions developed internally.

Within these categories, students are asked to agree or disagree with statements (on a 5-point scale of Definitely Disagree to Definitely Agree), or indicate how often a learning style or behaviour is encouraged. Students are encouraged to take an overview of their experience of the whole course and take into account the balance of what constitutes a ‘better’ and ‘worse’ experience.

How do I take part?

If are a Doctoral or Research Masters student and registered at the University before November 2020 you will be sent an individual email with a link to take the survey. You can also access your survey through Myplace

Additional emails containing the link will be sent out weekly until you complete the survey.

Is it anonymous?

Your survey response is confidential to the team processing the results and no reporting outside of this team will identify any individual. Any results communicated to staff will be anonymised and reports are produced in aggregate format. The survey asks that any comments you make should not identify yourself or any specific members of staff.

What happens to the results?

Your feedback is important. Over one hundred universities and colleges take part. This means we can compare your experience against similar postgraduates at other institutions to see if we are supporting your learning as we should. We use the findings to improve the support and learning experience for future students.

Where can I find out more?

If you want to opt out, are unsure about anything to do with the survey, or have any difficulty contact Strathclyde Doctoral School.
