A leading engineering academic from DTU – the Technical University of Denmark – has joined the University of Strathclyde.
Professor Anja Maier, an expert in engineering systems design, has been appointed Head of Strathclyde’s Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management. She was previously Deputy Head of the Innovation Division and Head of Section for Engineering Systems Design at DTU.
A graduate of the University of Cambridge, her research has a particular emphasis on complexity and human behaviour. This includes design communication, design in networks, and design cognition. She has a particular interest in healthcare.
Professor Atilla Incecik, Dean of Engineering at Strathclyde, said: “We are delighted to welcome Professor Maier to the Strathclyde team. She has a wealth of experience in engineering design and is highly respected internationally, particularly in the field of health.
“Professor Maier’s focus on innovation will play an important part in the department’s next chapter as we drive forward research excellence with our partners in business and industry, and in the development of the next generation of engineers.”
The University is playing a leading role in the development of two of Scotland’s innovation districts: Glasgow City Innovation District, a global hub for entrepreneurship innovation and collaboration in the city centre; and the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland near Glasgow Airport. Both Districts draw on the University’s engineering expertise.
Professor Maier said: “I am truly excited to be able to take up the Head of Department role at the University of Strathclyde. I look forward to joining colleagues in the Faculty, the Department, and the University in the on-going efforts towards learning together with and educating the future leaders who will shape our world and tackling the challenges that affect our natural, human, and designed environment on a global scale.”
Professor Maier serves on the Board of Management of the worldwide Design Society, on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Engineering Design, serves as Associate Editor of the journal of Design Science, and is a member of the International Council on Systems Engineering. She is also a Fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, a Board member of the Copenhagen Centre for Health Technology, a member of acatech – the National Academy of Science and Engineering in Germany, and a member of the ATV – the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences.
