Undergraduate wins best research project award

Research project on regeneration of recycled glass fibres from wind turbines recognised

A fourth year student working with the ACG has once again been recognised by the IMechE for excellence in their research project, receiving the award for best project in the 2017-18 academic session. Muzamil Irfan’s project, titled “Regenerating the strength of thermally recycled fibre reinforcement for reuse in composite applications” was judged the best from a selection of over 100 individual honours projects this year.

Supervised by Senior Lecturer Dr Liu Yang and PhD student Sairah Bashir, Muzamil made a significant contribution to our research into chemical routes to regenerating the strength of glass fibres. He applied various chemical treatments to glass fibre waste recycled from end-of-life wind turbine blades using our in-house fluidised bed combustion process. We look forward to welcoming Muzamil back in the coming 2018 term to continue his research activities as part of an advanced research program for his Masters year.
