MSc in Safety & Risk ManagementGalaxy Lam

Why did you choose the University of Strathclyde MSc in Safety & Risk Management?

I was awarded my BSc in Environmental, Safety and Health in 2007 and chartered as CMIOSH in 2017. I focused on my work for several years, until I joined the Hong Kong Institute of Safety Practitioner where I met different safety professionals. This led me to think about my areas of improvement and the need to learn about safety in more depth, whilst strengthening my safety and health knowledge and widening my connections for my future career development.

I have compared different MSc safety related courses and believe that this program was the most suitable for me because it has a strong reputation and is accredited by relevant professional bodies, ensuring that the degree meets industry standards. I know that the University of Strathclyde have co-organized with other courses with the enterprise in Hong Kong which make me have more confident of the quality of the study. Also, this course is distance learning and the study period is flexible for me which suits my schedule. Moreover, I think the University of Strathclyde has strong connections with industry partners and organizations. This allows students to access networking opportunities, industry events, and guest lectures from professionals working in safety and risk management roles, not only in UK or Hong Kong, which is beneficial for future career opportunities in different countries.

What has been your experience of the course to date?

I have enjoyed studying in the University and as this is a full distance learning course, I have been able to use Zoom for online discussion and communicate through email. I chose email as my main communication channel. The University also provided different self-learning videos and materials which help the student to study anywhere at anytime. I experienced quick responses from the University administration staff and the tutors / teaching staff for the whole study period and staff were kind, patient and professional. The coursework is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage risks in different industries and sectors.

How do you find balancing the commitments of work with those of the programme?

I have a job, I am a mother with 2 kids (one is 5-month baby) and I have to study -  it is a big challenge for me. I balance family, work and study, it is really hard for me to have the perfect balance. But it is important to have a clear goal and trust yourself, then just go for it.

Moreover, the most important thing is to ensure effective time management. I have set-up a schedule that allocates specific time slots for work, study, assignments, and other commitments. Prioritize tasks and set realistic goals to ensure you stay on track. I focus and work on a specific topic to enhance my efficiency and effectiveness.

I have informed my employer about my study programme and discuss potential adjustments to my work schedule if needed. Open communication can help manage expectations and allow for better coordination between work and study commitments.

How do you find the support available to you at the University (resources, tutors, teaching etc)?

The University provides clear and easy to follow systems to enable students to access necessary study resources. The learning platform is easy to use and follow, although I needed to take more time in the early stages until I was up to speed. The teaching material is fruitful, and the assignments are suited to the learning outcomes. All tutors who I have met are professional. They have provided valuable information and comments during my whole study period and their support improved my confidence that I could complete the course. I feel comfortable and happy to communicate with them - they are very kind and supportive when handling my questions and concerns. The Programme leader is open-minded and listens to student feedback, and tries to adjust the learning method / material to suit student needs.

Would you recommend the programme to other people…and why?

I am happy to recommend the program to others if they want to study effectively and efficiently in limited time.  This course helps students become a more professional and competent safety practitioner. If I can complete this course, so can others!

What are your career ambitions for the future?

I am now working as a safety advisor, I would like to become a more professional expert to help different trades and workers to work safely and establish safe environments for everyone, to know their risks and how to handle their risk. It is important for others to understanding and treat their own safety and risk, using the idea of “life influencing life”  on promoting safety.
