Our alumnus Michael Dougall, a practicing Architect and Studio Tutor in the Department, is the youngest ever President of the Glasgow Institute of Architects.

This was announced at the Council’s AGM in the CCA Glasgow, the GIA’s previous President Michael Jarvis is also a graduate of Strathclyde University.

Michael Dougall graduated from the Department in 2007 and became a Council member of the GIA in 2011. He has recently been working on a large urban regeneration project and a Community Centre for a Development Trust in Dumbarton.

On his election Michael reported; “I am very much looking forward to my time as President of the GIA. The council is currently made up of some very talented and dynamic people and we have an extremely exciting programme over the next two years. This year Glasgow will host the RIAS Conference and of course The Commonwealth Games, and preparation is already underway for The Year of Architecture, Design and Innovation in 2016.’

Michael joined the practice called ‘Collective Architecture’ based in Glasgow who enjoy an excellent relationship with this Department having four members of staff teaching in Studio.  “I have a had a continued involvement with the school since graduating and became a member of the teaching staff in 2012. Engaging directly with practicing architects on a weekly basis was one of the most enjoyable parts of my architectural education. I am now honoured to be part of an energetic first year studio team which guides students through a live build project in the first semester and their first urban building response in the second semester.”

His range of work also includes several collaborations with some of Glasgow’s most notable fine artists, including the Turner Prize winner Martin Boyce and in February fabrication will start on six sculptural artworks produced in association with the artist Toby Paterson.

The Department of Architecture is very proud that the Glasgow Institute of Architects has recognised Michael’s talent at such a young age and wishes him every success in the future.
